What do they have in common?
People.
People need and enjoy both.
What else?

In looking at The shoe retailer, Zappos, and at ourselves (MG), we share a fascination with culture.  Every company has a culture, like it or not.  Tony Hsieh knows the difference between culture that works and culture that doesn’t.  The “Corner Office” of the Sunday New York Times is always worth reading, and the January 10 edition is no exception.

MG spent two-plus hours at our Directors’ Retreat last week focusing on our mission and core values.  We were joined by Jeanne Liedtka (picture inset, UVA Darden Professor and author of The Catalyst).  Her advice?  Have core values and a mission statement only if you can commit to them (and if everyone can repeat them).  Jeanne and Tony probably know what they’re talking about.
