Since Labor Day, we have been inundated with Halloween as soon as we walk in the grocery store; there are endless displays of candy in every shape, size and variety specially packaged in bulk for the upcoming Halloween holiday. Unfortunately, these displays do not pass the roving eyes of our children including my son Oliver who has discovered the world of chocolate & all things sweet. So, what is a mother/dietitian to do on what is probably the most non-nutritious holiday of the season? Certainly, it is difficult to prevent our kids from indulging in the deluge of candy. While I plan on allowing Oliver to indulge in his treats; I do have an “action plan” to minimize the amount of sugar he ingests into his tiny body in a matter of minutes.
As a preventive action, I plan on holding a little “party” beforehand where I will serve a hardy and nutritious chili along with crunchy, homemade cornbread. Dessert will consist of chocolate chips pumpkin cookies (hey, they have beta carotene and dark chocolate) & homemade Halloween cupcakes. Now I know this plan will not stop my child and his cousins (who will be visiting from
Williamsburg) from gorging on all things sugary & processed. But, like most young children, they are pretty attuned to their hunger singles & they know when they are full. Oliver has even “returned” cookies when he is full. So by the time we venture out into the night I hope he is more captivated by the costumes & goblins galore, rather than the candy. Stayed tuned next week… we’ll see if my plan works.
