Recently, I attended a Blue Ridge Dietetic Association conference in
Charlottesville,
VA. Among the notable speakers, the owner of Polyface Farms and co-owner of Feast (a gourmet market in
Charlottesville) and a local food hub. I left the conference hearing the praises of all things food-related in
Charlottesville. Feeling a bit disheartened about my own city, I expressed my views to my husband Tom. Being the always enthusiastic cheerleader of all things
Lynchburg, Tom helped me come up with a list of our fabulous food “finds” in
Lynchburg. I’m sure I have left several out, but here are some good places to start:
1. The Farm Basket: This makes the top of my list. Where else can you get a gourmet lunch, then shop for unique gift items in the company of a friendly staff who knows your son by name. Gifts, cookbooks, desserts, ice cream, candy; something to please the young and old.
2. Magnolia Foods: A
Lynchburg staple, classic lunches, wine and a mouthwatering cheese selection; and ,of course, who doesn’t love a Magnolia’s cupcake.
3. Taste Selects: Speaking of cupcakes, this new downtown bakery has scrumptious desserts featuring my favorite desert of all!
4. The Lynchburg Farmers Market: Over the past 4 years, this market has made major changes featuring more farmers, local foods and gourmet items such as wine, cheese and artisan bread. Nobody likes getting out of bed early, but trust me the smell of
Lorraine’s bakery is a great reason to lure yourself out into the cold in the midst of winter.
5. Market on
Main (coming soon hopefully): In the theme of all things downtown, this soon to open gourmet market will hopefully prove to be a success in our ever growing downtown.
6. The Blue Marlin Seafood Market and The
Bedford Meat Shop: head to
Bedford Avenue instead of the big box grocery stores for your fresh fish and meat items.
7. Culina: instead of the “you’ve seen-one-you’ve-seen-them-all” feel of Williams-Sonoma, Culina has its own personality with a very friendly staff to help you find all the tools you need to complete your cooking needs.
8. Of course, when you are tired of cooking at home, we have some great local restaurants: Isabella’s, Mangia, Grace, Dish, Bull Branch, Star Light Café, The White Hart, Waterstone and Shoemakers.
Happily, I am singing the praises of all things local and food related in our great city of
Lynchburg, VA. Hopefully as things continue to grow, we can give
Charlottesville a run for their money (I think we already are).
