Kolache (also spelled kolace, kolach, or kolacky, from the Czech and Slovak plural koláče) are a type of pastry consisting of fillings ranging from fruits (including poppy seed, raspberry, and apricot) to cheeses inside a bread roll.

I love Kolache!  No, I am not from Eastern Europe, my ancestry is purely Italian, but this pastry has been a tradition in my Italian family for as long as I can remember.

My mother’s cousin Anna Mae prepares my absolute favorite kolache. When it comes to this pastry my usual attempts at moderation fail me & I indulge in slice after slice.  Given my lack of will power I only indulge in this pastry once a year.  Each Christmas my mother receives the walnut filled kolache that hands down is my favorite holiday treat. Now, being an avid baker one would think I would like to try my hand at making my own kolache.  However, seeking out a recipe would require me to acknowledge the likely immense amounts of butter & sugar that make this pastry such a pleasure to partake in.  Plus, I do not think my baking skills can rival a bonafied kolache baking expert. So, the dietitian in me will remain in denial when I bit into my first crumbly bit of holiday kolache…. tradition trumps nutrition.  However, the key with all our holiday indulgences is realizing that some treats should only be consumed on special occasions.  With some extra exercise during the Christmas holidays maybe we can help mitigate some of the untoward effects on our holiday figures.
