Fall has always been my favorite season.  The chill in the air, the smell of wood smoke as it rises & curls from chimneys.  The beautiful colors as the leaves turn from yellow to orange to fire red.  It all brings me back to my childhood in New England.  One of my favorite trips each year was to the apple orchard.  We’d pick our own apples, then watch as some of them were turned into apple cider in a giant old-fashioned press.  Dad would always brew up a batch of apple butter the following weekend.

I was brought back to that happy time in my life this past week.  I was peeling & slicing local Cortland apples for The SEED School’s ‘Local Flavor Week’ event.  One bite & I was instantly transported back to that orchard.  It’s amazing to me how quickly a scent or flavor can bring about such strong memories, and the pleasant, or unpleasant, feelings we associate with them.

Local apples & pears are at their peak right now.  Enjoy them while they’re here! They may bring back a piece of your childhood as well.  And if you are wandering through central Virginia --- visit farmbasket and you’ll find the best in the area.
