Cutie-pie cupcakes? So last decade. Designer donuts?
Now, you’re talking!
Cupcakes, from plain and simple to over-the-top boutique cakes, have been in the forefront of food trends for the past decade or so. They’ve been everywhere…cupcake ‘restaurants’, multi-tiered wedding cakes made up of hundreds of little cakes, ‘taco truck’ style mobile food units serving up $5 confections at fairs. And the list goes on….and on…and on….Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy cupcakes, when I’m the one eating them. From a chef perspective though, they’re very much a pain in the bundt cake to make!
I was thrilled this year when I started reading about how donuts are now replacing cupcakes as the new & exciting sweet of choice. The new flavors seem a bit odd to me…perhaps I’m getting old. I hate to admit how often I dial in a radio station and change it immediately, thinking to myself, good golly miss molly, how can anyone listen to that screaming garbage?!?! As soon as the words pop into my head, I hear my mother saying the same thing about the popular music of my day (oh come on….it’s different! We had Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Deep Purple…true, classic, masterful music!) But I digress….my point in bringing up music is that perhaps I have come to the age where new food trends are in the same category as the music kids are listening to today. I mean really, watermelon-mint, basil-chocolate, & butternut squash donuts??? Really??? I’m willing to try them though, especially if it means I don’t have to make any more cupcakes!
